How Hocus Pocus 2 Compares to the Original ?

How the sequel was created

When producer and co-writer Kirschner first pitched the sequel to Disney, it took six months before the studio even passed on the project, so they brought it to Freeform instead. The film was eventually taken over by Disney+. It was announced in October 2019 that Hocus Pocus 2 would be made, with Jen D'Angelo writing the script. (Kirschner stayed on as a writer and producer).

How the sequel was created

At the time, D'Angelo was tasked with finding a way to bring back the original witches Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, who now appear in the sequel alongside Doug Jones as the affable zombie Billy Butcherson.

Hocus Pocus 2 is both a prequel and a sequel, taking place in 1653 Salem and focusing on the Sanderson sisters' origin story.

330 years later, we meet Becca, Izzy, and Cassie, a group of friends splintered by high school politics. Becca accidentally summons the Sanderson sisters with yet another cursed candle on her 16th birthday.

Winnie (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy), and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) are back and even more campy than before, in stark contrast to Peak, Escobedo, and Buckingham's more dramatic performances. But the same Hocus Pocus magic works: the film leans into larger-than-life qualities while still maintaining the spirit of a Halloween classic.
